How To Take Online Payments

How much business are you losing by not making it so easy to pay you the way your customer wants? If it is not easy, they will not pay. You could have the best product in the world, but if they encounter errors or do not have options, they will find an interior service and just make it work. All because it was easier to pay the other service.

A few years back, when I worked at a manufacturing facility, we had our annual quality ASSurance audit (emphasis added on purpose). As the quality manager, I made sure everything ran smoothly and that we held such a tight ship that no findings or errors were found within our processes. Once the audit was over, we had to pay thousands of dollars for the service to audit us. Crazy right?


What was even more crazy is that the third party auditing service did not take credit cards, just debit, cash or check. It was 2016 at the time and well into the digital age of credit card processing. I thought to myself, how can their business survive without taking credit cards? We even offered to pay the 3% charge if they took credit, but they didn't, and they are no longer in business.


Now think of your business. The time we are in now, demands that you be flexible in how you take payments for your business. Cards, phones, and even watches can make payments now and you need to be ready or you will lose the sale.


Let's talk about the options you have to take online payments.


Your website


Having payments options through your website is the best way to take payments. Your customer sees a product or service they want, they fill out the order form and boom your paid. You did not have to be there on the phone to have them buy it, your website helped you with that.


It's seamless! You look professional and you build confidence with your customer that you are ready to do business with them. But before you can take direct payments on your website, you need to make sure you have a few things.


You need to make sure you have a valid SSL certificate where your website starts with the HTTPS. It also helps to have a good privacy policy, payment refund terms and conditions, and, if you are keeping their personal information like emails and names, it helps to make sure your website is TLS encrypted for financial transactions.


I would also recommend ISO 27001 and ISO 27018 certifications from your website provider to protect personal information and that your website be PCI DSS compliant to ensure secure credit card processing.


Invoicing

Invoicing is a great way to take payments online because many of invoicing services like Square, Wave Financial, PayPal, Stripe and QuickBooks handle a lot of the technical things for you. I have seen many people have their services from their website, forward to these sites to finish the transactions. Some even have a type of integration with popular website builders to make the transaction a bit more seamless.


There can be a downside though. When a customer is ready to buy, it's best to get the payment right away. Sending an invoice gives them time to rethink their decision and let doubt of your service come in. Plus, adding more clicks and navigation makes it more difficult for them to pay.


Then once an invoice is sent, you have to chase those invoices through follow up, which is yet another step in your payment process using invoices.



Think about amazon. They made it so easy for people to shop, pay and ship products.
